Board of Education President Thomas Maimone, congratulates Pat Aitken, board member-elect, following the results of the May 17 budget vote and election. Mrs. Aitken will fill Mr. Maimone's board position. Mr. Maimone, whose term of office expires June 30, did not seek re-election.

A record number of residents turned out to vote on the Manhasset Union Free School District's proposed 2005-2006 operating budget on Tuesday, May 17. After tallying the 4,618 ballots, it was determined that the school budget passed by 730 votes.

"We are deeply appreciative of our fellow Manhasset residents for supporting the budget," stated Thomas Maimone, board president. "The approved budget will enable the district to continue to provide the challenging academic programs and extensive extracurricular activities that have helped the Manhasset School District achieve national prominence. At the same time, the budget demonstrates fiscal responsibility and ensures the continuing financial health of the school district. My colleagues on the board and I contributed many long hours this year to the development of the budget. The administration was also diligent; especially Dr. Gavin and Mrs. Johnson who were instrumental in breaking down the numbers, revealing areas of potential savings, and explaining the budget to the public. Finally, we must also express our gratitude to the many members of the community who publicly spoke up before the budget vote."

In addition to approving the proposed operating budget, community residents voted on three propositions, and selected one of three candidates to fill a seat on the board of education. Residents approved two propositions and elected Pat Aitken to the board for a three-year term beginning July 1.

With the passing of proposition two, voters agreed to reduce the transportation eligibility requirements from one and one-half (1-1/2) miles to one (1) mile. The new one mile limit will go into effect for all secondary school students residing in Manhasset on July 1. The approval of proposition three affirms the award of a multi-year transportation contract in conformity with the district's bid specifications. Proposition four, which sought approval of a bond to finance the purchase of school buses, was defeated. However, the measure was necessary only if proposition three failed.
