Twenty-year Manhasset resident Eileen (Lee) Reid left this earth April 24, 2005, two months shy of her 81st birthday following a brief hospital stay in Kentfield, CA. She loved her family, politics, movies and literature, and still did The New York Times crossword puzzle in ink daily until the end.

Born in Manchester, NH June 19, 1924, Lee graduated from Wellesley College in 1946 and pursued graduate work in English literature and composition at Boston University and Hofstra University. She taught high school English in Concord, NH; Plainfield, NJ and Oyster Bay.

Lee accompanied her husband John (Jack) to Los Angeles; Tacoma, WA; and San Francisco in the early 1950s. They eventually settled on Long Island, first in Syosset and then in Manhasset, where they lived in Strathmore Vanderbilt for 20 years. Their three children, Susan, Hilary and John (J.C.) attended Manhasset public schools before the family moved to San Rafael, CA in 1978.

A descendant of William Sargent, whose family landed in Massachusetts in 1618, Lee was proud of her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution. A lifelong Democrat, she was active for many years in political campaigns and the League of Women Voters. On election day you would find her at the SVCC clubhouse working the polls.

She also ran the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine program at Saint Mary's for many years. In San Rafael she was a lecturn at St. Isabella's and active in the Women's Club of Marin. Lee was an avid supporter of numerous Catholic charities.

In retirement her favorite pastime was playing bridge.

Lee is preceded in death by her adoring father, James Dennis Cash; her mother, Esther Maloney Cash; and her brother, Kevin R. Cash, author of Who the Hell Is William Loeb? She is survived by her devoted husband of 53 1/2 years, John J. Reid; her children, Susan Reid; Hilary Reid McGloin; and John Cash Reid; and sons-in-law Wil Schneider and Frank McGloin, all of northern California.

Known as "Grammy" to grandsons Kevin; Matthew, P.J. and Joseph; and to granddaughter Jamison Lee; Lee Reid will be missed for her vibrant intellect; her avid interest in world politics; her unwavering faith; her throaty laugh; and the pronounced New Hampshire accent that never faded, even after so many years in Manhasset and California.
