Coleman/Wenk/Harmeyer/Corins fifth grade boys lacrosse team took lessons learned in a tough loss to Huntington and returned to their winning ways with two hard-fought victories.
As the skies cleared on a dreary Sunday morning, so did the fog of a sluggish performance the previous week. Exhorted by the coaches to come out and play aggressive, the boys opened up an offensive onslaught against West Islip. Allesandro "The Big A" Troia opened up the scoring with a nice coast to coast sprint that left three or four West Islip players in his wake and the goalie wondering what kind of day was waiting for him. Troia followed with two more goals for a nifty hat trick, Kevin Katzmann added 2, Roger Coleman, Tommy Wenk, Brendan Conroy and Conor McNamara each tallied one. McNamara's first on the season came from a great pass from Brad Harmeyer. Harmeyer turned in an outstanding performance even after taking a big hit after unleashing a wide shot. The attack led by Patrick Pilch and Martin Minardi consistently hit cutters for shots.
Quinn Moroney (3 assists and 12 ground balls) and Roger Coleman (1 goal, 3 assists, 7 ground balls) sparked the middies to their best game to date. Katzmann picked up 6 ground balls and Garret Cramer had 2 as Manhasset outhustled West Islip 48 ground balls to 28.
The defense again played tough. Anchored by Troia, Michael Gaudio and Sean Collins the defense contested shot after shot. Luke Minardi and Chris Cordi stuck to the West Islip offense especially after the 4 goal rule went into affect. Goalie John Patrick Kiggins turned back 12 of the 15 shots faced and Manhasset notched a 9 - 3 victory. According to Coleman, "This was a total team effort. This was the best game we have played as a team all year long."
Watching a Mother's Day afternoon game on the turf is the ideal way for any Manhasset mom to spend the day. Especially for a game against rival Cold Spring Harbor. Again the boys didn't disappoint.
Troia picked up a nice hat for his mom Enza in the form of a three goal performance and Kathleen Katzmann watched her son Kevin tally 1. Kevin took a tough hit and came back inspired to give the CSH defense fits. Diane Wenk saw Tommy feed Troia on a nifty pass from the corner. With one of the best defenses around, CSH contested every Manhasset shot and the game had more scrums than a rugby match. Pat Moroney watched Quinn pick up 15 ground balls (46 on the season) and win 3 key face offs. Mary Pat Pilch and Kim Harmeyer caught Patrick and Brad play inspired on offense. The game was hard fought from the first face off. Both teams went at each other the entire game. Margo Coleman, Barbara McNamara and Sally Calvin saw Roger, Conor and Christian Salvaterra turn in outstanding performances and Delores Minardi was doubly proud watching Luke and Martin play hard. Goalie mom Barbara Kiggins held her breath 15 times as John Patrick turned away all but three including a game saver in the last minute. Mary Jo Collins, Antoinette Cordi, Stella Gaudio saw their sons Sean, Chris and Michael blanket the CSH offense the entire game. The defense deflected 7 passes and altered four shots. Middie moms Mary Conroy and Celia Cramer were actually proud that Brendan and Garret had some steals on the day.
Next up a road match against Long Beach on Sunday at 11 a.m.
