The Manhasset Girls' Varsity Track team has finished the regular league season with a record of 11 wins and 2 losses. The team will be competing at a few invitationals over the next few weeks in preparation for the championship season and possible qualification for the State Championships in Syracuse. The Division Championship meet will take place on Monday, May 9 at Cold Spring Harbor High School.

There is a nucleus of hardworking athletes that have been the force behind this successful season. The mainstays in the distance events are a weekly battle between Lisa Mascali and Natalie Bindert. Both girls are now on the all-time performers list in the 1500 meters, running 5:17 and 5:17.1 respectively. Natalie recently broke the school record in the 2000 meter steeplechase with a time of 7:51.6. They also compete in the 800 meters and the 4x800 meter relay. Lena Edelstein and Carolyn Kim have done an excellent job covering the grueling 3000 meter race and quite often jumping into the 4x800 relay with only 10 to 15 minutes rest. Newcomers, Hillary Gallo, Laura Smaldone and Kaitlin Powers are improving each week and contributing to the team scoring. The 400 meter hurdles, one of the toughest races, is being handled quite well by Lindsey Ready, Bitsy Whipple, Martha Shepanzyk and Laura Weber. Lindsey's 73.6 second time places her sixth on the all-time list, and her 17.6 in the 100 hurdles ranks her fourth on the list. The sprint events have been covered by Shelby Marzouk, Kara Wilhouski, Kaity Yim, Ashley Cramer, Dorothea Ehrhardt, Danielle Calderone, and Christine Nash.

Bitsy Whipple has also been progressing in the discus where she has thrown 70'6". Haille Brewster and Isabel Scimeca have been throwing well in the shot put and the discus also. Another strong event is the triple jump. Laura Weber recently leaped 30 feet, the fifth best ever at Manhasset, and has been closely followed by Haille Brewster, Carmen Lam and Shelby Marzouk.

The team is getting stronger each week and setting personal bests. Track and field is a sport where hard work shows up as steady improvement. They work as a team and they work as individuals to improve their times and distances. Congratulations on a fine league meet season and good luck in the championships!
