Manhasset's Varsity Indoor Track Team won its 27th title on Jan. 28, at Farmingdale College. The athletes outperformed eight Conference V schools for the title: Valley Stream South, Valley Stream North, Clarke, Great Neck North, Roosevelt, West Hempstead, Roslyn and Bethpage. Fourteen different athletes contributed to the team victory, competing in 12 different track and field events. Scoring was: 10 pts., 8 pts., 6 pts., 4 pts., 2 pts., 1 pt. for first through sixth place.

Some of the faces change each year but the team's success always depends on a small number of athletes who compete in many events, athletes who have special events and relay runners. Six athletes were the work horses this year, each competing in three events: Erik Lawrence, Tom Popain, Matt Sutherland, Matt Brennan, Cary Choy and Shannon Mason scored 67 of the team's 94 points.

Conference champions this year were: Tom Papain (12) 3200 meters, Erik Lawrence (11) 1600 meters, 4 x 200 meter relay, Shea Licata (9), Matt Sutherland (11), Shannon Mason (10), Cary Choy (12) and 4 x 800 meter relay of Matt Brennan (11), Tom Papain, Yousef Qureshi and Erik Lawrence.

The Nassau County championship was held on Thursday, Feb. 3 at the Suffolk County Community College campus. Leonard Arrington won the Nassau County Indoor Triple Jump title. Manhasset was county runner-up to Lynbrook in a field of 30 schools. Manhasset's Erik Lawrence, Tom Papain, Cary Choy, Chris Peyser (shotput, 39 ft. 2 ins.), Shannon Mason, Matt Brennan, Matt Sutherland, Shea Licata, Terence Molinari and Ian Chiou scored for Manhasset. Leonard Arrington (12), Tom Papain (12), Erik Lawrence (11), Cary Choy (12), Shannon Mason (10), Matt Sutherland (11) and Shea Licata (9) were state qualifiers.

The team had the eastern states on Feb. 28 and the New York State meet on March 4-5 (Syracuse Carrier Dome) on the schedule.
