A recent independent study conducted by Otto White, Jr., a certified industrial hygienist and private consultant hired by the board of education to monitor radiation levels caused by cellular equipment at Manhasset High School, has been completed and presented to the board. According to the report submitted by Mr. White, an evaluation of the radiofrequency (RF) radiation at Manhasset High School did not reveal radiation levels recognized to be hazardous to the health of building occupants and were well below the FCC Limits for maximum permissible exposure for general population/uncontrolled exposure. This reconfirms the results found in the previous study conducted by Mr. White in 1994.
The primary test areas for this survey were the sixth level tower roof, the fifth level tower roof, the fifth level storage area, and the two fourth floor classrooms (400 and 401). In addition, classrooms 313, 309, 307, 306 262, 208, 207, 206, 204, 158 and 156 were also tested upon request by the district. Survey equipment used by Mr. White included a NARDA Model 8718 Survey Meter with NARDA Electric Field Probe 8721D (FCC compliant), an Optoelectronics Handi-Counter Model 3000 Frequency Counter, and a Dexsil Field Star ELF Magnetic Field Monitor.
"The health and safety of our students are our top priority," stated Dr. Lawrence Bozzomo, superintendent. "We appreciate Mr. White's diligent effort and meticulous report on behalf of the Manhasset School District. We will continue to closely review his findings and ultimately base our decision on what is best for the children and our community."
The initial cell phone towers were originally installed on the roof in the late 1980s. Today, with three cell phone companies leasing space on the high school roof, the school district receives over $100,000 in annual revenue, which is then used by the district to reduce the tax impact on community homeowners.
