North Strathmore Ryder Cup 2005 winners: Team World: Bill Clarke, Bill Kent, Peter Cobos, Marc Torres.
|
The inaugural North Strathmore Ryder Cup was won in convincing fashion by Team World over Team Italia.
Leading off the Cup were two four ball matches played at the Tam O'Shanter Country Club. Bill Clarke/Marc Torres and Peter Cobos/Bill Kent steamrolled their opponents with neither match going past the 14th hole.
The alternate shot matches were hosted by The Long Island National Golf Club. A strategic pairing move by Team World, pairing Clarke/Kent against single handicapper Mike Canino, gained another point for Team World and the route was on!
As Team World now held an insurmountable 3-1 advantage, both teams headed to Casa de Cobos in Southampton where a festive dinner and overnight accommodations were provided for both teams. "It feels like Team World is at a wedding and we (Team Italia) are at a funeral" stated crushed Captain Dean Cirella.
The following day, four singles matches were played at the East Hampton Country Club. Although the singles matches were anticlimactic, three of those matches were decided on the 18th hole! Team world was able to halve the day's action and win the inaugural North Strathmore Ryder Cup by a walloping 5-3 total. A disappointed Michael (The Fireman) Papa lamented that his team was hosed by the camaraderie and preparation of Team World. Added Mike Canino; "this was a great event but I need teammates who can step up not get stepped on."
