On Monday, Jan. 31 the 7-0 MHS Varsity Boys swim team traveled to SUNY Farmingdale for a showdown with #2 seed Massapequa (6-1). In a highly competitive meet that came down to the very end, Manhasset prevailed 98-88. This marks the first time in the team's history that they finish with an undefeated 8-0 conference record. This is the team's second conference championship in the past four years.
The victory over Massapequa concludes a remarkable string of victories for the # 6 seeded Indians. During this streak the Manhasset team defeated then undefeated #1 seed Great Neck North, #3 seed Wantagh and the #4 seed Jericho. "The determination of our team is incredible," stated Coach McGrane, "Every member of our team sacrificed their individual goals for one common goal...and nothing else was acceptable to them."
The boys defeated Massapequa by winning nine of the 12 events in the dual meet. The medley consisted of John Kenneally, Mike Zito, Brian Cogan and Alex Smitham. They won in a time of 1:54.2. Junior Jimmy Mulderrig won the 200-yd free in 2:07.25 and the 100-yd butterfly in 1:03.77. Junior Brian Cogan won the 50-yd free in 24.33 and the 100-yd free in 54.40. Senior Pete Cobos placed first in diving scoring 142.65 points. Junior John Kenneally won the 100-yd backstroke in a time of 1:04.61. Senior Mike Zito won the 100-yd breaststroke in 1:15.08. The 200-yd free relay consisting of Mike Zito, Mike Gotimer, James O'Hanlon and Brian Cogan swam a winning time of 1:41.77.
Manhasset sealed the victory by swimming 8 of 12 events in which all Manhasset swimmers scored points. A total team effort!
