The Manhasset boys swim team continued their remarkable run by winning their seventh consecutive conference dual meet to improve to 7-0. In the last two weeks the Indians defeated Hempstead, Bethpage, Jericho and Wantagh. Their victory over Wantagh on Friday guaranteed the Indians of a share of the conference title. This is their second title in the past four years (the only two conference champions in the history of Manhasset boys swimming).
This improbable streak, started three weeks ago when the #6 seed Manhasset upset #1 seed and defending conference champion Great Neck North. During this streak many personal best times have been posted.
Leading the way is an experienced senior class whom all posted personal best times. James O'Hanlon swam a 24.6 50-yd free and 55.9 100-yd free. Jeff Hunt swam a 2:38 200-yd IM and 6:18 500-yd free. Mike Zito swam a 25.5 50-yd free. Pete Cobos scored 142 points in 1 meter diving and swam a 1:25 100-yd breaststroke and 1:11 100-yd free. Arya Morshed swam a 2:22 200-yd free.
The following juniors posted personal bests: Brian Cogan swam a 23.83 50-yd free, 54.4 100-yd free and 26.00 50-yd butterfly. Jimmy Mulderrig 2:11.08 200-yd free and 1:04.3 100-yd butterfly. John Keneally swam a 56.5 100-yd free and 1:05.3 100-yd backstroke. Alex Smitham swam a 58.72 100-yd free, 2:27 200-yd IM and a 6:09 500-yd free. David Nebel swam a 27.6 50-yd free, 1:04.2 100-yd free and a 1:15.08 100-yd butterfly.
Sophomore Mike Gotimer swam a 32.8 50-yd breaststroke, 26.2 50-yd free, 2:38 200-yd IM and a 1:17.8 100-yd breaststroke. James McKenna swam a 27.7 50-yd free and a 1:04.3 100-yd free.
The following freshmen also posted personal bests: Kevin Love 1:02.3 100 yd-free, 1:14.8 100-yd butterfly and 1:21 100-yd free. Matt Carrozzo swam a 1:13.3 100-yd free, 2:45 200-yd free, 1:28 100-yd backstroke and 108 points in diving. Omi Morshed swam a 33.8 50-yd free and 8:30 500-yd free. Brian Kim swam a 33.7 50-yd free, 1:31 100-yd backstroke, 1:48 100-yd breaststroke and 8:31 500-yd free.
It came down to the last relay event of the meet. The Manhasset MS Boys Swim Team trailed undefeated Jericho by two points. The boys knew what was at stake. This would be their first-ever, undefeated season in the team's short seven-year history. In a close race that was contested until the final five yards of the race Manhasset pulled away to place 1st and 3rd earning them an 86-82 victory. Manhasset silenced the Jericho crowd and stunned the previously undefeated Jericho team.
