  • News: Eileen Brennan Honored

    The crowd gathered at the North Hempstead Country Club on Saturday, Jan. 15 to celebrate with Eileen Brennan on her retirement, after almost 20 years with Anton Newspapers, most of those as editor of the Manhasset Press. Eileen is the mother of 10 children and many members of her family, representing multi-generations, were present. When one of her daughters, Virginia, formally toasted her mother those present learned that Eileen had won a writing contest, the Prix de Paris, in her senior year of college which resulted in a job at Vogue magazine. During her career she also wrote book reviews for North Shore Magazine and Newsday. In 1989 she won the Press Club of Long Island Award for a series she did on power (LILCO) on Long Island. Adding to her list of accomplishments, she was also named Woman of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce. FULL STORY

  • News: Dr. Austin Gavin Sizes Up the Job

    Dr. Austin Gavin, newly hired interim assistant superintendent for business, stated that Manhasset students are accepted to ivy league schools because of academics and athletics. It is a Gold Coast school, he said, yet the place is in tumult. For a community in equilibrium, he continued, any one of the issues the Manhasset School District is grappling with could sink it: austerity, state audit, outsourcing transportation, neighboring school district fraud, superintendent departure, teacher negotiations and the reassessment which started everything. All are leviathan issues, said Dr. Gavin, and all are complicated issues, for example, in the past, one might say to acknowledge the pressure to settle the teacher negotiations quickly and remove that from the pot, but at what cost?   • Sports: MHS Athletes Recognized as Citibank News 12 Scholar Athletes

    Alycen English, a senior at Manhasset High School, has recently been chosen as the Citibank-News 12 Scholar Athlete. English plays varsity soccer and varsity lacrosse. There are 30 students in total chosen for this award throughout the school year. In order to receive this accolade students must have high academic standings and an outstanding athletic performance.
