Norman Haweeli, 87, a resident of Meetinghouse Village, Kittery, Maine died Nov. 18, 2004 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Mr. Haweeli was born on April 14, 1917 in Berlin, NH the son of Ayoub and Nijmey Haweeli. He was a graduate of Berlin Senior High School class of 1934 and the University of New Hampshire in 1939. He received his master's degree from Harvard Graduate School of Education. He received his doctorate from Columbia University Teachers College. Mr. Haweeli served as assistant headmaster at the Berlin Junior High School before moving to New York to become elementary principal and later the Superintendent of Schools in Dobbs Ferry, NY, then the Ravena-Coeymans Central School District. While at Columbia, he was also a substitute superintendent of East Williston schools.

Mr. Haweeli moved to Illinois and became superintendent of the Glenview-Northbrook high schools. He returned in 1969 to New York to head the Herricks School system in New Hyde Park from which he retired in 1978. He lived in Manhasset during those years. In all Mr. Haweeli spent 22 of his 25 years in education at the administrative level.

Mr. Haweeli served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946. He saw extensive duty in the South Pacific and was discharged as 1st Lieutenant and later he reached the rank of Major in the U.S. Marine Reserves.

For many years he was very active in the Episcopal Church in New Hamphsire, New York, and Illinois. Upon retirement the Haweeli's spent a number of years enjoying their home and friends in the Sarasota, Florida area. Mr. Haweeli was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Edward, sister, Julia Reynolds, and sister Ida Tillinghast. Mr. Haweeli is survived by his wife Eleanor. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on July 20, 2004. He is also survived by his son Stephen, and his grandson, Ned both of East Hampton, a brother David and his wife Henrietta, his niece Ellen and a nephew John all of Greenwich, CT.

Mr. Haweeli's life was enriched over the last 10 years by the care, comfort, and compassion shown to him by the physicians and staff at the Seacoast Dialysis Center in Portsmouth, NH.

A private family graveside service is planned for early next spring in the Russian City Cemetery, Berlin, NH. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
