  • News: Manhasset Lights Up for the Holidays

Last year on Dec. 5, the day scheduled for the annual Tree Lighting ceremony, Manhasset was hit with more than 12 inches of snow. This year the weather was more cooperative. Although it was cold, cold, cold, there was no precipitation and the crowd that gathered enjoyed every minute. After the Pledge of Allegiance was led by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, under the direction of Legion Commander James R. Russell, Rev. Jimmy Only of The Congregational Church of Manhasset gave the Blessing on the event. North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman followed and congratulated everyone present on the atmosphere of good will and friendship that permeated the air. Manhasset High School music director Eileen Murphy and the Manhasset chapter of the Tri-M Music Society led the crowd on a sing-along of familiar holiday songs; Randy Knudsen, band director, followed with the High School Brass Choir. Manhasset Park District Commissioner Patricia Roberts welcomed all in attendance and introduced her fellow commissioner, Mark Sauvigne, and Supervisor Kaiman, Town Clerk Michelle Schimel and Town Councilmen Fred Pollack, Wayne Wink and Tom Dwyer. Then it was time for the poster awards, presided over by Poster Chairman Nancy Morris on behalf of the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce. Winners were: Nursery through Kindergarten: Christopher Parisi, Adam Smotkin and Melissa Codney; Grade 1: Amanda Wysota, Dominick DeLucia and Dana McCarney; Grade 2: Caitlin McNamara, Dylan Creeden, Francesca Sostar; Grade 3: Juliet Schneider, Matthew Wysota and Halie Laviano; Grade 4: Ryan Ross, Elise Simon, Courtney Smotkin; Grades 5-6: Yelena Zangas, Katherine Kratsios and Paige Pacent; Grades 7-12: Katie Morris, Ivy Chiu and Kristen Mitsinikos. The overall winner was Yelena Zangas of Shelter Rock School. After the poster awards were given out the countdown began for the trees to be lighted and then there was the wait for Santa to arrive, which he did perched as usual on a Manhasset-Lakeville Fire truck.
