The Manhasset Girls Cross Country team placed ninth in the 'B' classification at the state cross country championships Saturday. The race was held at Chenango Valley Park in upstate Binghamton. Sanya Alexandra led the Manhasset girls with a time of 21:20.6 over the hilly and somewhat chilly 3.1 mile course. Natalie Bindert followed closely in 21:23.2 and Captain Lisa Mascali in 22:00. Lisa has been recovering from a hamstring strain but bravely continued running to help the team get to the state meet. Co-captain Lena Edelstein ran 22:08.4 and fifth runner Carolyn Kim completed the scoring with a time of 23:07. Running in the sixth and seventh spots for the Manhasset Harriers were Sarah LaRosa and Aditi Kanth. The team will be graduating both Lena and Sarah, but they have a very strong nucleus returning. The experience of competing at this level should benefit them next year when they make a run at a consecutive county championship. Any interested distance runners please apply.
Matt Brennan of Manhasset's boys team was the first finisher in the 'B' race for all of Nassau County. He ran a time of 18:26 for the 3.1 mile course. Being a relative newcomer to the sport, he showed a great potential for the future.
