On Thursday, Oct. 21, the Manhasset Post 304 of the American Legion held its Annual Installation Dinner at the Swan Club in Glenwood Landing. Past County Commander William A. Baxter performed the ceremony assisted by Richard H. Coyle, sergeant-at-arms and Chaplain William G. Martin of the Manhasset Post. Chaplain Martin opened the installation ceremony with benediction, and subsequently conducted the MIA/POW ceremony and the prayer before the meal.

Baxter welcomed all the Legionnaires, members of the Auxiliary and guests, and requested everyone to join him in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem. He then requested the sergeant-at-arms to assemble the officers being installed and conducted the installation ceremony. The newly installed officers for the 2004-2005 year are Post Commander James R. Russell, 1st Vice Commander John F. Keitz, 2nd. Vice Commander Anthony W. Buzzitta, 3rd Vice Commander Ronald G. Linn, Adjutant Felix G. Andrews, Treasurer Joseph Labella, Chaplain William G. Martin, Historian Richard E. Miller, Service Office George E. Becker and Sergeant-at-Arms Richard H. Coyle.

Commander James R. Russell thanked Past County Commander William A. Baxter for installing the new officers. He went on to speak briefly of the major accomplishments of the past year namely: our Post's support of the U.S. Army 301st. Area Support Group; the selection of Katherine Gilman, sponsored by the Auxiliary for Girls' State, who was elected Girls' nation president; top honors accorded the Manhasset Post at the recent Nassau County Legion Convention for Law and Order, Americanism, Membership and History. The Commander emphasized that in the coming year, the Post will be a visible presence, reaching out to as many veterans as possible throughout the community. He indicated that educational programs for the youth through the schools will have a high priority, along with support of the VA Hospital at Northport and recognition of the sacrifices of our Armed Forces specifically at the Veterans' Day Services and Memorial Day weekend.

Commander James R. Russell introduced his new officers, past commanders, and guests. He recognized Mrs. Evelyn Baxter for her efforts in making all the arrangements for this special occasion. He thanked everyone for attending, wishing them an enjoyable evening.
