Archangel Michael Church Purchases Property
The Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church of North Hempstead closed on its purchase of vacant land on Fairview Drive in Port Washington on August 6, 2004. Archangel Michael, the only Greek Orthodox church in North Hempstead, has long outgrown its present site in Roslyn Heights. The purchase is the culmination of efforts extending more than a decade to find a suitable property as the future site of a new dome church and ancillary structures.
School Board Faces Challenging Agenda
In an interview with the Manhasset Press, Thomas Maimone, newly elected president of the Manhasset Board of Education, said that he and his fellow board members welcome the news that New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi's office will conduct an in-depth audit of the district. Hevesi announced on Aug. 3 that five districts on Long Island, one of them Manhasset, would be audited in response to the scandals in the Roslyn and William Floyd districts. Hevesi stated: "I believe most school district officials are honest, hard-working professionals and most schools are well-managed. We are conducting these audits to help restore public confidence and to identify problems and mismanagement...No one should jump to any conclusions."
Lights on Manhasset Mavericks!
Under the leadership of Dr. Nick Rallis, the Manhasset Mavericks fourth grade travel soccer team played under the lights at half-time during a Long Island Lady Riders professional women's soccer game. The girls had a memorable night.
Seventh Annual North Shore Sweetheart Tennis Tournament
More than three hundred men and women tennis players including more than a dozen from Manhasset, Roslyn, Port Washington and East Williston demonstrated solid tennis skills-as well as a strong commitment to an important charitable cause-when they participated in the Seventh Annual North Shore Sweethearts Tennis Tournament at the Shelter Rock Tennis Club in Manhasset from July 25-August 1.
