Kitty Klein

The Board of Education of the Manhasset Public Schools has announced the appointment of Kitty Klein as Director of Guidance and Counseling Services, K-12, effective July 1. Ms. Klein is filling the position left vacant when Mr. Glenn Mehrtens, interim director for two years, left the district.

Ms. Klein joins the Manhasset staff with nine and a half years of teaching, counseling, and administrative experience in both public and private schools. For the past year she served as director of guidance in the Locust Valley School District. She has been assistant principal and director of guidance in two New York City Schools and previously had been adjunct professor and counselor at colleges in Manhattan and on Long Island.

Ms. Klein has a master's of science degree in counseling and human services and a professional diploma in administration and supervision in education, both from St. John's University. She also received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Long Island University/ C.W. Post.

Ms. Klein's professional activities include chairing an accreditation committee and a pupil personnel team. She is experienced in preparing and planning master schedules, senior evaluation surveys, state reports, devising guidance support programs, and college, career, financial aid and scholarship workshops for students and parents.

Commenting on her appointment, Ms. Klein said, "I look forward to developing a rapport with students, parents, and staff within the Manhasset Public Schools. I love working with students and want passionately for them to love learning and school. I am proud of my interaction with students. In my previous districts, I have enabled students to achieve overall growth and academic success, empowering them to reach their potential. I am anxious to help Manhasset youngsters to grow intellectually and academically, and I look forward to a successful year."

Nancy Casella has been appointed Assistant Director of Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services, K-12. Responsibilities of this position have been changed and replaces the District Coordinator of Special Education, 7-12, previously held by Maggie Blair. Mrs. Blair retired from the district in June.

Ms. Casella brings 22 years of extensive experience in special and general education, all working within the NYC Board/Department of Education. Most recently she has been employed as assistant principal at a junior high school in Forest Hills, a position she held for the past year.

Prior experience includes assistant principals posts in Queens and Brooklyn and serving as chair and assistant chair on committees on special education in NYC. Ms. Casella was also a special education teacher for elementary and middle school grades for five years.

She has experience in testing, placement, evaluation and analysis of students with special needs.

Ms. Casella is currently a doctoral candidate at St. John's University. She has master's degree in forensic psychology from John Jay College and in special education from Hunter College. Ms. Casella also earned a professional diploma in educational administration from Hunter College. She received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Queens College.

Ms. Casella commented that she is anxious to work in Manhasset, to meet the daily challenges of the position and to interact with colleagues, students and staff, and help all students succeed academically in their school careers. Logo
