Elizabeth Ekkers McDermott, 66, a Kensington, MD, resident who was a teacher and guidance counselor in the Maryland school system, died on January 29 at Good Shepard Hospice in Lakeland, FL, after a long battle with breast cancer.

Mrs. McDermott was born in St. Louis, MO, November 6, 1937, where she lived for 16 years. She moved to Manhasset, NY in 1953. Elizabeth graduated from St. Mary's High School in Manhasset. She also graduated from St. Louis University with a degree in English literature. She went on to receive her master's degree in guidance from Troy State University. She first came to the Washington, DC, area in 1971 where she has lived until now except for a six-year period living in Pensacola, FL.

She taught school and was a guidance counselor in New York, Missouri, Florida, and Maryland. She retired as a guidance counselor in 2003 from South Carroll High School in Carroll County Maryland. Elizabeth was also the Regent of her chapter of the Maryland State Society Daughters of the American Revolution for the past two years. She was a life long member of the organization, following in the footsteps of her deceased mother Betty Ekkers of the North Riding Chapter of the DAR in Manhasset.

Her first husband, Robert John McDermott died in 1976, her second husband Walter Boren Satterfield died in 2003.

She is survived by her beloved son, Robert Joseph McDermott of Lakeland, FL, a brother Thomas Ekkers of Huntington and sisters Mary Barrows of Vero Beach, FL, Fran Wessley of York, PA, Suzanne Stephens of Manhasset and Janie Marcoux of Southington, CT.
