Maggie Grundman retired after 34 years of community service. She was acknowledged for her long involvement in and dedication to Adventures in Learning.

Barbara Donno was re-elected president of the board of education for the 2003-2004 school year. Ruben Cohen was elected vice-president.

The Greentree Foundation, established by the late Mrs. John Hay Whitney, gave $150,000 to the Manhasset Community Fund.

After 20 years the striped bass population is staging a comeback, which is evident in the catches in Manhasset Bay.

Chaminade High School completed a new state-of-the-art physical fitness center. Two full-time trainers are available to ensure the students receive proper training and advice.

Manhasset High School coaching legend Ed Walsh was honored by about 25 of his former players from championship teams, on the occasion of his 90th birthday. Among the notable players from Walsh's era, which began in 1948 and continued for 30 years, were Bob Brink, Bill Hess and Jim Brown.

Frank Moroney, supported by his fellow Republicans, unveiled his plan to combat illegal housing.

Ann M. Galante retired after 12 years as Town of North Hempstead Receiver of Taxes.

Jane Stiger and her son, Will, ran into former President Bill Clinton at the Congo attraction at the Bronx Zoo. Mr. Clinton graciously posed for a photo with Will.

The Town of North Hempstead won its redistricting suit in the appellate division of the New York State Supreme Court. It affirmed the town's right to create district lines for the new ward system. The suit had been filed to permit the board of elections, not the town, to draw the new district lines.

The Incorporated Village of Munsey Park heard a proposal to film a movie on Bellows Lane in 2004 starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Rev. Thomas E. Hammond announced he plans to retire after serving as pastor of Manhasset's Lutheran Church since September of 1984.

St. Mary's Elementary School began the new school year with many improvements-new computer rooms, classrooms, nurse's office, book room, art room, expanded cafeteria and access to the new full-sized gym.

Americana Manhasset continued to evolve as the new east section of the center was completed. Old timers may remember the less elegant Newberry's. Under Frank Castagna the shopping area continues to enjoy its extended facelift.

Manhasset remembers the national event and remembers its own in the Candlelight Memorial Service held on September 11. The Manhasset clergy sponsored the event.

Hurricane Isabel took its toll on trees in the area.

Thirty volunteers, including a brownie troop, removed over 170 pounds of garbage from Bar Beach to be analyzed by the Ocean Conservancy in Washington, DC. The cleanup was organized by Pam Landeta.

The Manhasset Park District unanimously approved the acquisition of 7.2 acres of land (adjacent to the Macy's parking lot) by condemnation. The district needed additional land for public parks and ball fields.

The Manhasset school district and the board of education unveiled their plan for a $62.5 million bond referendum that included renovation and building plans for the secondary school and capital plans throughout the district.

The third annual Manhasset Children's Circus performed free for children in grades six and under. There were two performances in the field in front of the high school.

The Manhasset Chamber of Commerce honored the Rotary Club and the Kiwanis Club at its annual Man/ Woman of the Year Cocktail Party.

Election results were in and Harvey Levinson defeated Charles O'Shea in a close race for Chairman of the Board of Assessors. Lisanne Altmann in the 10th Legislative District, and Craig Johnson in the 11th, were victorious. In the Town of North Hempstead Jonathan Kaiman, Michelle Schimel, Rocco Iannarelli, Wayne Wink and Fred Pollack were elected. All the winners were Democrats as they continued to consolidate gains made in recent years.

The new tentative property reassessment values were mailed to all Nassau homeowners. They are the first of three years of court ordered assessment updates of all residential properties.

Town of North Hempstead announced plans for an 11,600 square foot clubhouse to be built at Harbor Links golf course. It is expected to net approximately $700,000 a year and be completed in the summer of 2004.

Manhasset was hit by a sudden snowstorm that deposited about a foot of snow on the area. The roads were particularly slippery and strong winds followed the initial blizzard. Despite the conditions the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony took place.

The Manhasset Park District restated its parking rules. There are over 624 parking spaces for 1,600 permits issued, therefore, a sticker does not guarantee a parking space. The district now charges $15 for the first permit and $50 for the second permit in the same household.

New York State Senator Michael Balboni and Thomas DiNapoli of the New York State Assembly addressed Manhasset Legion Post 304.

The Manhasset School District's architect presented a revised plan for construction and renovation in the secondary school which reduced the proposed bond by about $16 million to a total of $46,577,725.

Barbara Ernst Prey, who grew up in Manhasset and currently resides in Oyster Bay, designed the Christmas card being used by President and Mrs. Bush. It depicts the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House.

The Manhasset Girls Varsity Basketball Team won the 20th annual Barbara Hoffman Invitation Basketball Tournament.
