Hayes G. Shimp Jr., 87, formerly of Plandome, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003 in Jensen Beach, FL, comforted with the presence of his immediate family.

Born in Lancaster, PA on March 31, 1916, the son of Hayes and Merium Bitner Shimp, formerly of Munsey Park. He married Marguerite Muller of Elmhurst on Oct. 31, 1942.

Before retiring to Florida, Hayes Shimp resided in Munsey Park and then Plandome from 1924 until 1991. Graduating Silver M from Manhasset High School, continuing his education with a BS/BA from Columbia College and an MBA from Columbia University. He served as a WWII Naval Veteran Intelligence Officer from 1942 - 1945, with honorable discharge as a Lieutenant.

As a New York resident - Mr. Shimp was active in many religious, community and business endeavors. At the center of his spiritual life was his membership in the Congregational Church of Manhasset, for which his parental family acted in forming the church, including the donation of the several acres occupied by the church today.

Mr. Shimp's contribution to his community took many forms. They include: member and chairman of the board of trustees for the United Church of Christ (UCC), Manhasset; moderator UCC Church; lay director of UCC Stewardship Board; member of UCC Seminary Committee; lay director of UCC Board of Homeland Ministry; and Director Council of Christian Churches, City of New York. Among other activities, Mr. Shimp solicited funds and membership for the Christian Churches of Japan; chaired United Jewish Appeal fund raising within the Tea Traders Association; gained sponsorship for Christian young women to attend the Theological School at Princeton University; and successfully promoted funding for college scholarships for disadvantaged black youths. He also initiated the afterschool Latch Key Program in New York City.

Mr. Shimp was an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America from 1927 - 1991. He became Scout Master, district commissioner Nassau County and chairman of Troop 71 committee, Plandome, NY. After the war, an off-shoot of the B.S. of America was the Plandome Old Timers Group of which he remained an active member. Mr. Shimp and his Troop 71 successfully hiked the Appalachian Trail from White Mountain, NH to Cherokee Grant, NC.

In the business community, Mr. Shimp was treasurer of his family's business specializing in importing and exporting of commodities, machinery, aircraft and specialty medical equipment. Director of the US Tea Association and founder of an executive search firm EAC in NYC, also a consultant to the coal industry.

Retiring to the south, Mr. Shimp continued to engage in community and church work, serving as a math mentor at Jensen Beach Elementary School and monitor at the Jensen Beach Community Church for youth social events. Mr. Shimp was chairman of the membership committee and director of the Rio Florida Civic Club. He was a member of the Congregational Church, Stuart, FL at the time of his passing.

Mr. Shimp has held lifetime memberships with the Academy of Political Science, The Society of Columbia Graduates, John Jay Associates, Beta Theta Pi, and The American Cribbage Congress.

Mr. Shimp is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marguerite, son Hayes G. Shimp III of Armonk, NY, daughters Susan Shimp Moran of Germantown, TN and Heidi Shimp Spellman of Port Washington. His children offered him the loving companionship of nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held in Stuart FL on Dec. 2, attended by his immediate family and community friends. A memorial service has been planned for his entire family and community friends in New York, scheduled at the Congregational Church of Manhasset on Saturday, Dec. 27 at 11 a.m. All are welcome to attend.
