The Manhasset Park District maintains over 624 spaces in the Manhasset area for commuter parking. With over 1,600 parking permits issued, it is difficult to promise a spot to all permit holders. Simply put, a sticker does not guarantee a commuter a parking spot in the MPD lots.

The Park District instituted rules for "multi-permit" households a few years ago. "It got to a point that some households had as many as 15 permits," commented Commissioner Patricia Roberts, "and that was a little over the top." The Park District now charges $15.00 for the first permit and $50.00 for a second permit. After that, the suggestion is to carpool to the lot.

"Parking is on a first come, first served basis in our lots," stated Commissioner Mark Sauvigne. "Although we would like to have reserved spots for all, it is not a practical idea. You can still find a few spots in the late morning, but the earlier you get there, the better chance you have of a prime parking spot."

"We have just repaved and restriped one of our lots. We were able to create more space because we moved the lighting from the center island to existing poles on streets," offered Commissioner Bernie Rolston, "this saves us some money and also creates additional space. As commissioners, we are constantly looking for ways to improve the district and listen to the constituency. We need to hear from the residents to identify needs. It is important that we get the feedback necessary to make sure we are offering the services people need."

This includes the acquisition of parkland as well as improving the parking facilities and offering other services the Park District can do to make Manhasset more comfortable. This week, the Manhasset Park District and the town team together for the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting sponsored by the Americana.

It also means identifying fraud and cracking down on illegal parking. Last year, the MPD enforcement team identified and towed at least two vehicles for forged stickers. The enforcement team is out daily checking the cars for stickers and the MPD will take action when necessary. "Fraud costs money," stated Roberts, "But more importantly, it takes away spots from legitimate permit holders. We cannot tolerate it and we will take action."

Getting a permit is not a laborious process. You need to bring your car's registration showing that you are within the boundaries of the Manhasset Park District and registered to the person providing proof of residency. You need to bring a valid driver's license with the same name as the registration. You must have proof of residency by providing two different and current utility bills such as a LIPA bill, Cablevision, water and or phone bills (cell phone bills are acceptable) or you can provide a Town tax bill, Deed, Voter's Registration or residential lease.

If you have any questions, you can call the MPD office or stop by the office on Manhasset Avenue.
