Mary Elizabeth Thompson Gove died on September 29, 2003, at age 71. Mary E. Muth was born on October 3, 1931 in Gary, Indiana during the Great Depression. She was raised by her maternal grandparents in Jamestown, NY. She graduated from Buffalo State Teachers College and received her master's in science education from Columbia University. Much of her professional career was spent as a biology professor at Manhasset High School. In 1983 Mary semi-retired to Cape Coral, FL, where she taught on and off at Barry University and dabbled in other business ventures, although her first love was always teaching and her students always admired her.
In1991 when Mary's son, Paul was diagnosed with kidney failure, she donated one of her own kidneys so that he could live.
In 1992 Mary was married to Blaine Gove, who cared for her to the end. They lived together on Pine Island until 2002 when they moved to Port Charlotte. Together they enjoyed blue grass music (Mary was an accomplished classical violinist) and flying ultra-light experimental aircraft.
Mary is survived by her husband, Blaine, sons, Erik and Paul, daughter Gail and six grandchildren who all loved her very much.
Remembrances may be sent to the Sierra Club.
