The Manhasset girls lacrosse team captured its first state title since 1988 by defeating East Rochester, 12-9 in a thrilling overtime game for the New York State Division II Championship.
In front of a crowd of 500 rain drenched fans, the girls played their hearts out. With the fans in the stands and players on the sidelines screaming "Let's Go Set," the Lady Indians responded with a 3-0 run in overtime to capture the title.
In the semi-final game played Friday, Manhasset escaped with a 13-12 win in a nail-biter over Skaneateles. Both of these games were hard fought and come from behind victories. In each contest, Manhasset trailed at halftime by one goal. The entire team played with poise and heart, which makes this final season even sweeter. Manhasset finished their championship season with a 20-1 record.
The team is coached by: Tom Campolettano and assistant coaches: Brandy Miller (a member of the 1988 state championship team), Laurie Sciortino and Melissa Cole. Team manager is Cassie Mishrick. Our biggest fan and lucky charm: Grandma, Mrs. Kathleen Kelly.
The senior team members include: Christine Kitt, Victoria Maino, Lindsay Buhr, Meredith Hotarek, Ashley Devins, and Kate Breslin. This was a great way to cap off their high school career.
The future for the Lady Indians also looks very promising. Returning defensemen include; Liz Byrns, Annie Duvnjak, Sarah LaRosa and Ariana Parasco.
Next years attack will feature: Caroline Buhr, Aly English, Lauren Taylor, Meghan Clarke, Alaina Melichar and Julia Maimone-Medwick.
The 2004 Lady Indians midfield will be anchored by: Juliet White, Julie Scherer, Megan Costello, Danielle Harris, Bridgid Millard, Amy Torpe, Kathleen Kelly, Eileen Ward, Kendra Barnard and Kate Gillman.
The goalie position will be handled by: Ashley Paterno and Kristen Jaroncyzk.
This championship puts the Manhasset Lacrosse and PAL programs back on track for many seasons to come. Congratulations to the team and coaches. A great win for all.
Let's come out and cheer on our defending champs next year. Let's Go Set!"
