On Saturday, May 17, a sun-soaked Ruggiero Field played host to the first annual Manhasset "Day of Baseball." Sponsored by the Manhasset High School Booster club, the event drew many fans who were treated to a full day of quality baseball. The girls PAL program lead off the day with a double-header of well-played games. Next, the Manhasset HS Junior Varsity defeated East Rockaway, 8-5. The Varsity baseball team capped off this successful day, soundly defeating the East Rockaway Rocks, 8-2.
While the Manhasset fans enjoyed popcorn, ices and music between innings, they also got a chance to watch a varsity team that is having its best season in over 25 years. The victory this weekend puts the Indian's record at 16-4. Led by coach of the year Rich Hess, the team also captured the Division D-2 championship; its first since 1976.
There were many highlights to the "Day of Baseball." Philip Ruggiero, a Manhasset baseball alumnus from the class of 1931 (and for which the field is named) was on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Former Manhasset baseball star Joe Pugliafico gave hitting tips throughout the afternoon to future Indian players. But the ultimate highlights were seen on the field, as the talented varsity team displayed their skills. While there were many stars, athletic director Rich Reilly and Manhasset Booster director Bob Miglis presented the Most Valuable Player of the Game trophy to senior Chris Moore, who went two for two and pitched a scoreless inning. Other standouts on the field included sophomore Chris Zuar (named All-County Most Valuable Player D-2), sophomore Luis Alvarez (named All-Conference), and senior Ed Wands (named to the All-League team).
Many thanks to all who helped organize this great community event, and to our Manhasset baseball fans - young and old - who attended and cheered our team to victory.
