(Lt. Commander Gordon S. Wilson wrote the following letter of thanks for the letters he received from Manhasset children to support him while he served in Iraq.)
As a member of the Armed Forces and a Manhasset native, I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of good wishes recently sent to me by some of the Manhasset citizenship (third grade and below). I understand that some of their undertaking was recently noted in the Manhasset Press, and I wanted to acknowledge their efforts myself, and felt your paper was the best means of doing so in an effort not to miss anyone who participated.
First, I would like to thank Diane Gershowitz and Lisa Belinsky of the first grade St. Mary's Religious Education Program and all of their students and fellow teachers who sent cards and letters. Secondly, I would like to thank the St. Mary's Elementary School third grade students (my "alma mater" by the way) and my mother, Patty Wilson, who teaches their class, for their letters.
I am currently deployed with the U.S. Navy, and have been closely involved in recent world events. The letters that these kids sent were passed along to many members of my command (Patrol Squadron EIGHT) and truly were appreciated by all. All the good wishes, hellos, questions, and comments were read closely and added moments of levity to some challenging days. Many of these letters were directed to me personally, and I, too, appreciate them. However, what I think needs to be noted is that I am truly proud to be serving with literally thousands of people who I consider heroes, whether they are actively flying the aircraft or turning wrenches on the flight line. The sacrifices that they (mostly young Americans) make on a daily basis cannot be overlooked, and these sacrifices continue whether we as a country are actively engaged in a conflict, or just maintaining our presence throughout the world. More importantly, I want to thank those at home who are just as heroic in my eyes-policemen, firefighters, those who volunteer their time to help others in some way-we as a country need to continue this noble trend of service. This culture of service to the community is what will continue to make our country as great as it is today, no matter what your political allegiances.
I wish I could answer every one of the letters sent. Due to the large volume, I'll attempt to answer a few of the most common questions:
1) Yes, I am a Met fan.
2) We did not get to go on February or Easter vacation unfortunately.
3) I do like flying, and it's not very scary either.
4) I can't wait to get home and back to my family again.
I will visit Manhasset again soon and hope to meet you too.
We have kept ourselves warm and safe in general, and can't wait to go on vacation when we get home!
Thanks again for all of your kind words. God Bless America!
Gordon S. Wilson
