  • News: Four Candidates for Two Seats on Board of Ed

There are four candidates running for two seats on the Manhasset School District Board of Education this year. Debbie Klein's first three-year term is up and she is running for re-election. Board Vice President Thomas Killeen completed his second three-year term and he is not running for re-election. The other candidates are Cindy Cardinal, Dennis Dionisiou and Marie Horowitz. Their biographical data and positions are printed below. At a League of Women Voters meeting in Manhasset's Black Box Theater on May 6, the candidates introduced themselves and spoke about their visions for the schools. There was little or no dissent among the four. All agreed that the school population is growing and that increase must be addressed. All agreed that emphasis must be placed on the individual child, whether it be a child in need of special education, a gifted child or the "middle child" who may get lost in the shuffle. Although each of the candidates recognizes the need for fiscal prudence, all seemed to agree that it will be an expensive procedure to accommodate the needs of the students in the coming years. • Sports: Manhasset Takes Third at State Championships

Manhasset High continued its rise into the rowing scene with its strongest showing at a regatta this year. The women's novice four of Agnes Shepanzyk, Kaitlin Hinz, Sarah DiPetro, Elaine Conte, and Ashley Ayarza won their heat Saturday with the second fastest qualifying time of the day. This was the first Manhasset Crew team to win a race in the history of the young sport. The team followed it up by coming from behind in the last 15 strokes to take third place in the state championships. This is also Manhasset's highest ranking in the state since the program began three years ago. Although the men's heavyweight four of Piero Ferrante, Pat Connolly, Denis Judge, Chris Monahan, and Anne Rubin did not qualify for the finals they finished ranked eighth in the state. The team came in third in its heat in an exciting race that came down to the last 10 strokes, again Manhasset surged ahead to capture third. In one of the most exciting races of the day the women's heavyweight four of Mollie Panzner, Laura Care, Kathryn McCabe, Julia Macina, and Katie Burch were in a three way race throughout the entire race that saw them bounce between second to fifth. In the end it was their determination in the last 100 meters that built a lead and allowed them to take third and also finish eighth in the state. The difference between the teams in third, fourth, and fifth was less than two seconds. The men's senior four of Dan Wright, Alex Nicolaides, Andrew Leonardi, Dan Grippi, and Kim Taylo were in a fight for third when a small equipment problem caused them to drop back briefly. The boat quickly regained form but ran out of time as they were moving up onto the leaders and into a twelfth place finish in the state. The women's novice eight of Serena McIntosh, Noel Charbonneau, Agnes Shepanzyk, Mackenzie Burch, Page Wassmer, Tara McCarney, Alex Sinclair, Michelle Moledo, and Marisol Ryu rowed their fastest time of the year that placed them in 16th in the state. The team travels to Philadelphia this weekend for the National Championships. FULL STORY
