This past Saturday night under the stadium lights, the long tradition of a Manhasset - Garden City lacrosse rivalry continued. Garden City entered the game unbeaten this season, while Manhasset came in with one loss to powerhouse Farmingdale, and undefeated in league play. The last time these two faced off, Garden City won the Nassau County Championship in what many observers thought was a referee-tainted game.
As the game got under way, the teams were playing in front of what was easily the largest crowd to watch a girls lacrosse game this year. Sophomore Aly English (1g) got Manhasset on the board with a quick stick on a feed from behind the cage by Lauren Taylor (1g,1a). Kendra Bernard (3g,1a) and Kate Breslin (3g,1a) repeatedly worked give and go's, making the defense slide and creating favorable isolation matchups.
But the story of this game was the defense. Ashley Devins played the game of her life in goal, making 12 saves (a number of them on penalty shots), and was rewarded by being selected "MVP of the Game." Senior Lyndsey Buhr held Garden City's high scoring attackman Caitlin Sotell to one goal, while Manhasset's other defensive players, Arianna Parasco and Tori Maino, constantly forced play outside and denied Garden City's shooters the ball on the crease. Julie Scherer and Amy Torpe each had several momentum shifting clears, and along with Bernard, played full field defense. When the horn sounded, Manhasset had an 8-5 victory, and revenge.
