After a brief illness, William J. Berrigan of Manhasset and Shelter Island passed away on April 22, 2003. He was 87. Mr. Berrigan was born in New York City and attended St. Paul the Apostle School on West 59th Street. He graduated from Xavier Academy and Fordham University. A veteran of WWII, Bill served in Europe with the 7th Armored Infantry Battalion.

Bill taught at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and rose to the rank of Lieutenant with the NY Police Department, retiring as Acting Captain of the 52nd Precinct. He was proud to say that he taught Denis Dillon, the Nassau County District Attorney, who remained his lifelong friend.

The beloved husband of the late Eileen Gilbert Berrigan, he is survived by his daughter Serie Morton, son-in-law, George and grandsons Gil and Liam. The funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary's, Manhasset, followed by burial at Our Lady of the Isle Cemetery on Shelter Island. Donations in his memory may be made to the Caring Hands Foundation, Church of St. Mary, 1300 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset, NY.

Helen Fater Hoffman was born in Brooklyn to Joseph and Genevieve Fater. She had one brother, Joseph Fater Jr., and one sister, Irene Fater McCartney, who survives her.

Married to William T. Hoffman, who passed away in 1992, she is survived by her two daughters, Jane Hoffman of New York City and Irene Hoffman of Annapolis, MD.

Helen attended St. Joseph's College of Women in Brooklyn, A member of the parish of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church of Manhasset, she lived in Manhasset for 40 years before moving to Stuart, FL, in 1995. In 2002 she moved to Annapolis to live with her daughter, Irene (just in time for the worst winter in 10 years).

She was active in the Girl Scouts as a troop leader, at Port Washington Yacht Club and St. Mary's School. Helen loved crossword puzzles (she finished the New York Times crossword puzzle every Sunday), the opera (she never missed a broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera on Saturdays), orchids and gardening, bridge, cooking and being with her family.

Despite many health issues throughout her life, she was a resilient fighter and fearless until the end. She passed away peacefully in Annapolis on Sunday, April 27, 2003, with her daughters at her side.

A memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Manhasset on Friday, May 9, at 10 a.m. , followed by a luncheon at Port Washington Yacht Club immediately afterwards.
