North Hempstead to Vote on Councilmanic Districts
The four members of the North Hempstead Town Board are elected at-large although once in office they are assigned a specific area of the town as the focus of attention. For years there has been discussion of changing to a system of "councilmanic districts" or "wards," in which candidates would run in a smaller area--for example Great Neck or Port Washington/Manhasset or Westbury-Carle Place-New Cassel or the Willistons and Roslyn. Democrats, who currently hold all seats on the town board, proposed that a referendum be placed on this November's ballot but Republicans circulated petitions calling for a special election. Town Clerk Michele Schimel challenged some of the signatures but she lost the battle in court and the town decided not to appeal. The referendum is now scheduled for April 29. There will be two issues for voters to decide at the referendum -- whether to change to a system of councilmanic districts and, if so, how many districts to create, four or six.

Highway Teams Shine in Storm
The road crews in Manhasset's villages performed heroically during Monday's record breaking storm. "They were excellent, as usual," said Munsey Park Village's Lee Regan of the three-man team. "They worked for 26 hours straight, from 8:50 p.m. on Sunday night to 10 p.m. on Monday. We had money budgeted and a salt residue from last year, so we're fine." Flower Hill workers were also complimented by the village. "They were wonderful, did a very good job. They worked from midnight on Sunday to 9:30 p.m. on Monday." In Plandome, Highway Department chief Larry Flynn said that his men also worked for 26 hours straight. "You couldn't let it get ahead of you," he said. The Plandome three-man team had a special responsibility because the village has its own fire department, whose path had to be clear at all times. The Town of North Hempstead said that it had received no complaints, a sure sign that the work had gone well. A drive through Strathmore on Wednesday confirmed that the crews had done their job. Even so, roads are narrow with the piled-up snow often leaving only one lane for traffic.
