Manhasset's varsity indoor track team won the 24th indoor championship since the sport startted in 1979. The Conference V championship meet was held on Thursday, Jan. 30, at Farmingdale State College. Manhasset's 114 1/2 points outran Lynbrook 79 points, Roosevelt 54 points, Jericho 35 points, Valley Stream South 35 points, Mineola 23 1/2 points, Clarke 18 points and Roslyn 10 points. Manhasset's victory was a team victory, scoring in all nine individual events and scoring in all the relays.
Manhasset's captain got the team off to an excellent start, winning the 3200 meter run. Jesse Cohen (12) won the 3200 meters with Tom Papain (10) fourth and Brendan McDonough (10) sixth. Dan Treitler (12) and George Ehrhardt (11) were fourth and fifth in 1000 metersss to make All-Conference. DSEnior Captain Scott Chiou (12) won the high hurdles with Alvin Wong (12) third; 55 meter sprinter Troy Williams (11) ran 6.6 for second with DAvid Young (11) sixth in 6.8; 3900 meterss Williams (11) was second (38.1) and Mike Connorsss (12) fourth; 1600 meters Jesse Cohen second, Erik Lawrence (9) fourth and Darren Wrayi (12) sixth; 600 metersss Andre Montague (11) fourth and Pat Bennett (12) sixth.
The field events--high jump and shotput--were important eventw with Mike Connors (12) finishing third in the high jump and Pat Hawkins (11) finishing second in the shotput.
The 4x200 meter relay team also were champions, beating Roosevelt ina close race. Ashley Montague, Mike Connors, Troy Williams and Brian Mullin carried the baton. The 4x400 meter team of Scott Chiou, Cary Choy (10), Chris Fillipelli (10) and Matt Sutherland (9) was third and the 4x800 meter team of Yousuf Qureshi (10), Pat Bennett, Jesse Cohen and Dan Treitler took second place.
The meet was scored 1st place, 10 points; second, eight points; third, six points; fourth, four points; fifth, two pointss and sixth, one point.
The team is now preparing for the county championships.
