The education system in Manhasset has been long heralded as an exemplary one. It boasts outstanding education at all levels. This has not occurred haphazardly. Generations of Manhasset taxpayers saw the value of investing in the future of our youth and have willingly done so.
A secondary benefit of this outstanding school district is that it has been a beacon for families and commercial concerns alike ensuring top real estate and commercial values for the community. Again this has not happened in a happenstance manner.
What flies in the face of all these community benefits is the embarrassing state of our public library; it should be the centerpiece of our educational system. At one time the library was most likely adequate to meet the needs of the community. But today it falls far short. Stacks are limited; reference material and computers minimal and quiet work and study areas nonexistent. The children's room is bursting at the seams. The library can't even qualify as a meeting place for civic groups or senior citizens as its community room is always being used, as it should be, providing educational programs for its patrons. The current library does not meet the criteria of a 21st Century educational and community facility.
In light of the prosperity and reputation this town has achieved, it is time to improve the current library. Compared to other school districts and communities, we fall well short of the bar. Investment in our youth and our neighbors must not ignore the lifetime benefits of a modern library. It is a legacy to be enjoyed by all and passed on to future generations. The library trustees have proposed a wonderful plan for a new and improved library. The time for a new library is now. Please vote yes on March 19.
