Five MHS Seniors Chosen Semifinalists in Intel Science Research Competition
Five more MHS seniors have joined the ranks of the nation's research superstars. For more than a decade, Manhasset students have consistently distinguished themselves as semifinalists in the Intel (formerly Westinghouse) Science Talent Search. On Jan. 15, Manhasset received word that five research students, the same number as last year's winners, were named among the nation's 300 brightest and best. This honor brings the number of Manhasset's semifinalists to 34 students over the past 11 years.

Plandome Manor's 'Safer Streets' Video Airs on Channel 20
Anyone living in or near the Manhasset-Port Washington peninsula for any length of time knows one thing - street traffic is getting heavier. But residents with concerns about the safety of their local streets and intersections due to increasingly busy traffic conditions have a sympathetic ear at the New York State Department of Transportation. The state DOT offers a grant program, now only in its third year, called the Local Safe Streets and Traffic Calming (LSSTC) initiative which encourages local municipalities to present their individual traffic issues for review by a DOT board. The state board judges the neediest cases, such as inadequate sidewalks or heavy traffic patterns in residential areas, and awards appropriate federal funding to help correct the problems.

Seventh Grade Girls Advance in CYO Playoffs
St. Mary's girls' seventh grade basketball team became the lone remaining parish team to advance in the CYO playoffs with its convincing victory over St. Raymond's. Playing at home at Immaculata Hall, the seventh-graders opened the game with a 15-0 scoring run and never looked back. Poised by a balanced offensive attack, Coach Mike Gaffney's team was in control throughout the contest and led 23-8 at the half. A third quarter 13-1 offensive run sealed the victory for the team which will now move on to play in the quarterfinals on Jan. 23 at 7:15 p.m. at the St. Bernard's gym in Levittown. After the game, Coach Gaffney stated, "It was a good win for us, everyone on the team made a substantial contribution to the victory and the girls are looking forward to the next step."

MHS Girls 5-1 in Conference
Manhasset High School Varsity Girls Basketball team played two conference games during the week. On Tuesday, Jan. 14 the team traveled to Seaford High School to play the Seaford Vikings and came away winning 63-23.
