On New Year's Day, 2002, Thomas R. Suozzi followed his eight years as mayor of Glen Cove by beginning his new role as the first Democratic County Executive in 30 years. This administration also marks the first time in history that Nassau County has both a Democrat as county executive and a Democratic majority in the legislature.

Town Board Holds First 2003 Meeting
The Town Board of North Hempstead held its monthly meeting on Jan. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Hall in Manhasset. The first order of business was a public hearing to consider the adoption of a resolution enabling the Town of North Hempstead to opt into a partial property tax exemption for qualified members of volunteer fire departments and ambulance corps. The resolution would enable those volunteer fire and ambulance workers who own real property within the Town of North Hempstead to apply for a 10 percent real property tax exemption. After the public hearing was closed, the vote for the resolution's adoption was unanimously passed.

Soccer Champs Extend Undefeated Streak in Post-Season
Undefeated (9-0) in the regular scheduled season, undisputed league champions, bolstered by a defense which yielded slightly over a goal per game, the U-13 Manhasset Warriors soccer team would surely have been justified in concluding that it had done it all. But, over Thanksgiving weekend, in the four game competition for the North Hempstead Cup, the club encountered even new dimensions of adversity, excitement, disappointment and, eventually, triumph. Let's review two action-packed days.

Manhasset High School Varsity Girls Basketball team played their second conference game on Friday, Jan. 3 at home against Great Neck North High School and came away winners, 73-48.
