Four Boaters Saved in a Daring Rescue on Manhasset Bay
In a tale worthy of Charles Dickens, two veteran members of the Manhasset Bay boating community braved the weather and turbulent waters of Manhasset Bay to rescue four hunters whose duck boat overturned in 10 feet of water off the Manorhaven shore. While rescue workers came from near and far, it was the prompt immediate actions of two brave men that averted what could have been a major holiday tragedy.

Ambassador Arnold A. Saltzman Recognized by Republic of Georgia With Order of Honor
The Honorable Arnold A. Saltzman, industrialist and United States ambassador under five presidents with diplomatic assignments in the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, South America, Central America, and Vienna, is the recipient of the Order of Honor from Georgia, an independent state formed in 1990 following the rupture of the former USSR. A resident of Sands Point, Ambassador Saltzman has served the United States in a wide range of policy-level, diplomatic, and economic assignments, receiving a Presidential Commendation for his efforts on the International Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

K of C Sponsors Free Throw Contest
The Father William A. Daly Council 2122 of Manhasset-Great Neck once again is sponsoring the annual Basketball Free Throw Competition. The contest is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus with the winners progressing through local, district, county and state level competitions. All boys and girls 10-14 years of age are eligible to participate in their respective age divisions.

On The Bay
There was no frostbiting on Sunday, Dec. 22, due to the holiday. Sailors will have a lot of opportunity to sail over the New Years weekend at the 90th Annual New Year's Frostbite Regatta. The regatta is only two days this year, beginning on Sunday, Dec. 29, with the final day of sailing on New Year's Day. The Past Commodore's Race will be held on the morning of Jan. 1, getting these stalwarts out early after a night of celebration.
