The Manhasset Allstars boys 15-and-under AAU basketball team ended their 2002 season with a victory over Wyandanch Project Hoops 16-and-under basketball team.
The game was played at the world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden. Coach Sly Johnson scheduled the game after the team returned from AAU Nationals in Clarksville, TN. Úquot;The boys worked very hard this year and they deserved the opportunity to play at the Garden,Úquot; he said. Wyandanch held the lead most of the game, but a late run in the final period gave the Allstars the victory 66-61.
The Allstars will expand their program to include ages 10-17 beginning in April. Sly hopes he can get the financial support to expand without having to charge the kids a fee. Úquot;We will not turn any kids away.Úquot;
The Allstars new home for the 2003 season will be Whitney Pond Park. Sly is trying to work on a long-term agreement with the Nassau County Recreation and Parks Department. Úquot;The plan is to have structured programs in the park throughout the spring and summer,Úquot; Johnson said Úquot;We want the kids in the park and off the streets.Úquot; For information on spring and summer leagues and tournament, contact Park Director William Vaughn - 571-8300.
