Trees Light Up a Wintry Sky in Manhasset
Last year the Tree Lighting ceremony in Manhasset was held under balmy skies. This year Dec. 6 brought a touch of reality as the hundreds of celebrants experienced bitter winter cold, which had been preceded by an early season snowfall of six inches. The Town of North Hempstead and the Manhasset Park District jointly sponsored the event. As Town Supervisor May Newburger said in her remarks, "Thanksgiving Day marks the beginning of the holidays for many people, but the Tree Lighting here in Manhasset is really the beginning in North Hempstead."

Manhasset Man Celebrates 100 Years
When I visited Harold Marchant in his Manhasset home, which he has inhabited since 1948, he was watching a football game on television and preparing himself dinner. One would never guess that in a few days he would be celebrating his 100th birthday.

High School Coach Bruce Minerley to be Honored at Varsity Basketball Game
Mr. Bruce Minerley, longtime Manhasset athletic coach, will be honored on Friday, Dec. 20 at halftime of the Manhasset High Schools' home varsity basketball game. For the first time in 33 seasons, Coach Minerley will not be at his familiar post as basketball coach. He retired as varsity coach at the end of the 2001-02 season.

Manhasset High School Varsity Girls Basketball Team Wins
On Friday, Dec. 6, Manhasset High School Varsity Girls Basketball Team opened their 2002-2003 season with a win over West Hempstead High School at the West Hempstead Gym. Led by senior Kate Breslin (16 points, 9 steals) and juniors Juliet White (10 points), Kathleen Kelly (10 points) and a very strong team defense.
