No arrests have been made in the fatal shooting of a Port Washington cab driver, an incident that took place Wednesday morning, Oct. 9 at 3 a.m. in Roslyn Heights.
Lt. Detective Dennis Farrell of the Nassau County police said that Ramon Jarpa, an employee with Deluxe Transportation Service of Port Washington, died during surgery at North Shore University Hospital at 5:05 a.m., two hours after being shot once in the chest.
According to Lt. Detective Farrell, Mr. Jarpa responded to a dispatchers' call to make a pickup at 12 Locust St. in Roslyn Heights. Upon arriving in the neighborhood, the driver realized that no such address existed. The dispatchers received a second call and then contacted the driver to wait for two male passengers. The next call the dispatchers received was from Mr. Jarpa, informing them that he had been shot and to call 911. Nassau County police quickly arrived on the scene and transported the victim to North Shore Hospital.
Police have confirmed that the shooting was part of an attempted robbery and that the call was intentionally bogus. They did not reveal how much money was stolen or what kind of firearm the perpetrators used. The suspects were only identified as two males. Police are also investigating to see where the phone calls came from. But Lt. Detective Farrell did say that the calls asked for a cab drive from Roslyn Heights to the Great Neck Long Island Rail Road station.
Lt. Detective Farrell did acknowledge that in recent months, there have been two other robberies in the vicinity of the Wednesday morning crime. Police are also investigating to see if there are any connections between this robbery and the other two incidents.
The robberies Lt. Detective Farrell alluded to occurred at the end of August. On early Wednesday morning, Aug. 28, a burglary took place at the Mobil gas station on Powerhouse Road. The next morning on Aug. 29, another burglary occurred at a residence on Orchard Street. In addition, a gas station on Roslyn Road was burglarized two evenings later, Aug. 31. All three crimes took place at either the late evening or early morning hours.
The detective also said it was too early to know if the robbery could be linked to another recent robbery of a cab driver in Wyananch, a village in Suffolk County. Lt. Detective Farrell said such incidents involving cab drivers remain a rare occurrence.
Mr. Jarpa had worked for Deluxe since 1993. Andrea Major, co-owner of Deluxe, said Mr. Jarpa was a respected and hardworking employee of the company.
"Everybody loved working with him," she said. "If someone didn't have the money for a fare, he would let them have the ride for free."
Mr. Jarpa was married with two small children. He also resided in Port Washington.
Detectives request that anyone with information regarding this crime contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. There is up to a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the subject(s) responsible for the crime. All callers will remain anonymous.
