Many of our readers have probably noticed the excavation that was begun in the Manhasset Park District property on the east side of Shelter Rock near the road to Strathmore Vanderbilt. It was to have been the site of a memorial to those lost on September 11. The project has been deferred and the Park District Commissioners have issued the following statement:

"In our haste to 'do the right thing,' we did not provide enough opportunity to hear the voices of those most affected by September 11. Most of the deliberation had been done by those of us who were shocked, saddened and wanted desperately to let the families know how much we cared about them.

"We fully intend to do something meaningful to honor our lost neighbors, while considering the wishes of their loved ones. This will take time. We do want to do it right, rather than quickly and will do our homework and make sure this testament will be appropriate for all concerned. We know we can count on all of you not only to understand but also to support us fully.
