  • News: Kenny Gardner Dies Suddenly at 89

    Kenneth A. Gardner, a featured vocalist with Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians for many years, died of a massive heart attack on July 26, 2002. He was 89 years old and lived in Plandome. For many years he was a leader of the Plandome Fire Department. In 1988 the Department held a "roast" for Kenny on his 70th birthday. (He was actually born in 1913 but took five years off his age for publication.) FULL STORY

  • News: Staying One Step Ahead in Water Production

    While touring the newest water treatment air stripper in the Manhasset-Lakeville Water District's arsenal to keep pure water flowing at an average rate of 14 million gallons a day in the summertime, it was reassuring to know that the Campbell plant can be run entirely by computers, all linked and chatting with each other at each step in the process as safeguards, and even more reassuring to know that it can be operated manually as well. Since there will be more talk of water treatment facilities in the coming months as various plans are discussed to pump and remove the contaminants from the plume from the former Unisys property, we asked Paul Schrader, superintendent of Manhasset-Lakeville Water District to give us a refresher course in "how the heck do you scrub water?"     July has always been a busy one for our junior sailors who spend their summer hours out on the water learning the fundamentals of sailing and racing. This July has been no different, except for the increased number of children who are learning early the joys of "messing around with boats." Following are some of the regattas that our junior sailors attended during the past month. On Monday, July 8, Cold Spring Harbor hosted the JSA Area A Optimist 2002 Regatta". Results for the JSA Area A Optimist 2002 regatta - local sailors only. Because of the large number of juniors sailing in this regatta, there were three divisions: Blue, Red and White.
