The proposal to build a new library building at the corner of Onderdonk Avenue and Northern Boulevard is an excellent solution to the long search for a way to increase library services for Manhasset. The old building has outlived its usefulness and is far too small and cramped for our existing needs. The path to reach this solution has been long, circuitous and arduous.

The architect has designed a functional, efficient, and practical library arrangement housed in an attractive building that blends with the surroundings. The building is not ostentatious, yet it makes a clear statement of Manhasset standards. The building's design and the site layout maximize the use of the two plots available for parking, for access into the building, and for library operations; yet do not impinge on the adjoining properties. Both an open staircase and an elevator provide access to all floors. In addition, there are enclosed stairways at each of three corners of the building. These provide more than adequate egress from all floors in case of emergencies. It is clear that both the architect and the library arrangement consultant have done their work well.

The library has on display near the front door a scale model of the new building and its surroundings, and several renderings of the exterior. It would be worthwhile for the individuals to see these so they know what they will be voting for when the library board presents the bond issue this fall. This is not a pig-in-a-poke. It is the culmination of years of striving to answer Manhasset's need for an adequate library. The result is a fine, mature, and well-thought-out plan. We would all do ourselves a great service by voting for the funds to build it promptly.
