In the final game to decide the 5th and 6th Grade Girls Softball Championship, the Athletics coached by Grace Giesecke and Tom Pappas won a stunning victory against the Yankees coached by John Minogue. In an extremely well-played game with stellar hitting and fielding, the A's squeaked out a one run victory, winning 10 to 9. After falling behind 8 to 3 in the second inning, the A's, behind closing pitcher Kelly Giesecke aided by great defensive playing, held the Yankees to only 1 run for the remaining 4 innings. Kelly also fueled the offense with three hits. Allie Gerba, playing 3rd base, made some great defensive plays, one of which led to a double play assisted by Jen Pappas at 2nd. Anchoring the other side of the infield, Victoria Belinsky at 1st made several key plays, and worked her usual magic while at bat. Whitney Quackenbush belted a key triple followed by smart base running and a steal at home. Also contributing with strong hitting were Lisa Nelson with a big double and Christina Vlachos with a timely RBI single driving in the tying run. A's catcher Shahar Sadon defended home plate well, limiting the Yankees ability to score, in addition she caught the foul out that won the game. And centerfielder Victoria Rainone, in addition to strong hitting, stabilized the A's outfield with a great performance. Grace Giesecke, manager of the A's, commented on how proud she was of her girls, who showed great team spirit and rose to the occasion in the season's biggest game. She also applauded the Yankees for their strong effort and sportsmanship.
