On Memorial Day, the Plandome Fire Department gathered at its firehouse after the Manhasset parade. There they held a barbecue picnic and gave rides on fire trucks for all the village children and young-at-heart adults.

In the midst of hot dogs, popcorn and ice cream sodas, the crowd witnessed the presentation of a special award to its popular and respected ex-chief, John F. King. It was the Nassau County Firematics Service Award, commonly known at the Firefighter of the Year Award.

This coveted award is given by the county for exceptional firematic service.

At the surprise presentation were Chief King's family and friends. Based on his many and unassuming contributions to the Village of Plandome and Nassau County, the only one really surprised at the selection of this dedicated firefighter for the award was the recipient. It added to the joy of the occasion.
