Dr. Martin J. Gately of Manhasset died on March 18, 2002. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Patricia. He is survived by his children: Tricia and John Rowe, Kevin and Terry Gately, Dr. Michael and Sherry Gately, Rosemary and Peter O'Neill and Timothy and Charleen Gately. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Dr. Gately was a proud New York City fireman for 13 years. He was an ensign in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a physician in private practice in Levittown for 47 years and retired as a Police Surgeon in Nassau County.
Dr. Gately was very involved in Fordham Prep and the Maryknoll Missions in Guatemala. He was also a member of the Knights of Malta and the Knights of Columbus. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary's Church in Manhasset, followed by interment in Nassau Knolls Cemetery. Donations in his memory to Fordham Prep or Maryknoll Missions would be appreciated.
Willard G. Hampton, 95, formerly of Manhasset, died in Greenville, DE, at the age of 95. Mr. Hampton was born in Amsterdam, NY. He was graduated from Union College in 1927 as an electrical engineer and was employed by New York Telephone Company, where he became executive vice president and a director. He retired after 40 years and became chairman of the Brooklyn Savings Bank. He also was a director and chairman of the executive committee of the Long Island Trust Company. After retiring again, he did private consulting in New York.
Mr. Hampton was chairman of The Commerce and Industry Association in Brooklyn and was active in numerous philanthropic and business organizations including the 100 Year Association, the Construction Users Council, the Brooklyn Hospital, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, Brooklyn Development Association and the Helen Keller National Association for the Deaf-Blind. Mr. Hampton was awarded an honorary LL.D. by his alma mater in 1951.
Mr. Hampton was married in 1935 to Grace Metzger, who died in 1946. In 1948 he married Renee Smith who predeceased him in January 2001. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Laura Market of West Melbourne, FL; a son by his first wife, Lawrence of Portugal (a second son, Elbert is deceased); a daughter of Mrs. Hampton, Mrs. Robert C. Knowles of St. Michael's, MD; two sons of Mrs. Hampton, Sanford, the assistant bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Washington, of Anacortes, WA, and Frederick of Albuquerque, NM. There are 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, in the living room at Stonegates Retirement Community, 4031 Kennett Pike in Greenville, DE. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to Helen Keller National Center, 111 Middle Neck Road, Port Washington, NY 11050, or to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810, or to the American Red Cross.
