Commissioner Patricia Roberts and the Manhasset Park District staff, in recognition of Earth Day on Saturday, April 20, spent the day planting 12 trees in and around Manhasset. Earth Day, as part of the Town of North Hempstead's annual clean-up campaign, had been planned in advance as a community event involving the local civic organizations and community groups. The Manhasset Park District staff and commissioners met at 6:30 in the morning and immediately began moving the trees into position at the various locations. Trees were planted at George Street, Hillside Avenue, Memorial Place (replacing trees previously removed), on Plandome Road and at the entrance of Strathmore Road with community assistance. Intermittent showers lasted throughout the day, but with the support of the new Park District "tractor" which helped lighten the effort, everyone was very satisfied with their day's work. At the end of the day, Roberts and the staff withdrew with the knowledge that the environment was much better off for their efforts as well as lending a helping hand in retaining the beauty of Manhasset.
