As we all agree the village desires to follow the original plan of pastoral beauty. The village restricts fences and many other obstructions that distract from this design; to a large degree this has been achieved except for the issue of noise.
There will not be a single 10-minute period during a work week for the upcoming summer that I or any other resident will be able to enjoy, due to these whining two-cycle engines. If you recall some of the wonderful early spring days we experienced recently, the quality was enhanced by the absence of whining left blowers. Why are we subjected to these attacks? It seems we can pay for all sorts of luxuries but peace and quite.
It is the responsibility of our officials to enforce the rules and laws of our village and the State of New York. I have yet to see a single one of the landscape people in our village wear earplugs or dust masks while operating these machines. In addition, to the noise, these leaf blowers create massive volumes of dust that exceeds any and all airborne particle guidelines of the EPA. How is it that our town prosecutors can be allowed to be so lax about these poor peoples' health? (Does he get paid?)
This is shameful that we allow these crews to abuse these men. Why is it that the owners of these companies can disrupt our beautiful surrounding, drown natures sounds and harm these workers? All the while we suffer. These are well known rules and will save us all from creating a larger deaf population (which I as a taxpayer will be require to foot the bill). Is this what you want?
I have made calls to the 6th Precinct on the noise issue, nonissue with the men in blue. On both calls, no police car even showed up after I gave my name and address. I was willing to press charges in both cases. It is the duty of our elected officials to have the laws enforced. When was the last time there was a summons issued in Plandome Manor or Manhasset for a noise compliant?
These noise rules are ignored daily. When four men attack a yard with four power tools, I have interior sound levels in excess of 60 decibels and the outside levels are off the chart. I believe that our local prosecutors need to visit the EPA website and the Quality of Life Hotline to inform themselves of the regulations. The Police Quality of Life line is 1-888-677-LIFE and the EPA is 718-337-4357. (Since they are commuters, they are unlikely to even be aware.)
Since I no longer commute to the city and attempt to conduct business at home this has become a critical issue. I have spoken with others living in the village and it is a well-known problem. It is unfair that someone should profit by failing to adhere to established rules while I am constantly disturbed while the town prosecutor is oblivious to it all. I look forward to solutions, as residents seem most capable of solving other issues we have encountered.
