Elias Martin (Al) Koster, age 85, a longtime resident of Manhasset, passed away on March 27. He grew up in Manhasset, attending St. Mary's Grammar School and Manhasset High School. He was an electronics engineer at Sperry Gyroscope Company, working on the team which developed airborne radar during World War II. He was proprietor of Manhasset Radio on Plandome Road from the late 1940s until 1970. He then joined the Manhasset school district administrative staff as technical advisor for audio visual equipment, a role which changed with the times and technology to include computers and all electronics equipment used by the school. He retired in 1995. He was active in community affairs including St. Mary's PTA and the building fund drive for the St. Mary's Boys High School. Al was also a member of the Lions Club, and served as president 1958-59. He was a licensed amateur radio operator since before World War II, and an avid golfer. A funeral mass was held at St. Mary's Church, Manhasset, on Tuesday, April 2. Donations may be made to Manhasset High School or St. Mary's High School.
