The newly organized Elementary Reorganization Committee began meeting during the week of March 6. As directed by the Board of Education, the administration established the committee to study alternatives for equalizing the elementary student population at Shelter Rock School and Munsey Park School.
Members of the committee are Dr. Robert Feirsen, chairman, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction; Janet McCauley, assistant superintendent for business; Ira Chudd, director of transportation; Lisa Bornstein and Mae Meoli, Munsey Park teachers; Debra Capolarello and Lynn King, Munsey Park parents; Lynn Screvane and Ann Soldano, Shelter Rock teachers; and Louise Molloy and Jeanne Signorile, Shelter Rock parents.
The charge to the committee is:
To study alternatives for shifting student population from Shelter Rock to Munsey Park by either:
Establishing a kindergarten center by locating all district kindergarten classes at Munsey Park
Revising the elementary attendance zones to result in a decrease of 3-4 sections at Shelter Rock and an associated increase in the number of sections at Munsey Park.
The committee is further charged to recommend one of these alternatives to the board of education by April 23, based on an assessment of the impact of the proposed change for the next four school years.
A public meeting for parents to provide input about the two options under consideration has been scheduled for Monday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the secondary school auditorium. At this time, the committee will present a brief summary of its work to date and listen to comments from parents about the two possibilities. In addition, parents and staff members are welcome to contact their representatives on the committee to discuss the options.
