A big plus for the Manhasset High School Swim Team this season has been the presence of its two divers: Will Lopez and Alex Vecchio. Adding to the team's point total at crucial swim meets this season, these sophomore divers helped propel the Swim Team to the Co-Conference Championship.
For the first time in more than a decade, Manhasset participated in the Nassau County Diving Championships on February 7 at Eisenhower Park. The county's top high school divers competed in the meet. In order to compete, each diver must complete 11 dives, including the Reverse Somersault and Inward Somersault, two very difficult dives to complete.
Will and Alex were the first Manhasset divers to compete at a county championship in over a decade. Will Lopez finished in 21st place. Alex Vecchio finished 11th in the county and third in the conference, earning All-Conference honors. Alex also won the Lester Schloan Award, which goes to the outstanding first-year diver in the county. Alex finished with a point total of 253.
"To have Alex win the Lester Schloan diving award was an incredible feat and tremendous honor," said Coach Matt McGrane. "It was a great way to culminate a storybook first season for Alex."
"In the past, we would lose close meets to teams who gained valuable points in diving," said Coach McGrane. "This year the trend was reversed!!! We're very proud of Will and Alex, who contributed so much to our winning season."
