On Saturday night, Feb. 9, Senior Captains Garrett Spitz, Jimmy Faello and Jamiel Hendricks scored 30 of Manhasset's 59 points to carry the team to a second-place finish in the county championship finals. Westbury won the county title in a field of 24 schools. Manhasset carried on the tradition of 22 years of finishing first, second or third in the indoor county championships.
Garrett Spitz finishes up an outstanding career at Manhasset: all-division as a freshman, all-county as a sophomore, Nassau County high jump champion ((6 1/2") as a junior and overall Nassau County high jump champion (6'5:") as a senior. Spitz will high jump at the state meet in Syracuse's Carrier Dome on March 9. Spitz will high jump for William and Mary College next year. Jamiel Hendricks, who has been recruited by St. John's, Rhode Island, Morgan State among others, has been the top long jumper on Long Island for two years. Hendricks won his second Nassau County title 21'9" at the county championships. Hendricks was all-division freshman, all-county sophomore, Nassau County champion and all-state as a junior and overall Nassau County champion and will compete in his fourth state meet at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse on March 9. Hendricks also competes in 55m, 4x200 relay and high jump. Spitz and Hendricks have been invited to the National Indoor Track championships on March 10. Jimmy Faello, captain of football, indoor track and lacrosse, has been a three-year starter and tremendous help in the shot put. Faello was all county as a sophomore, Nassau County champion (45'8") as a junior and Nassau County runner-up all county (46'9 3/4") as a senior. He has been a member of two Nassau championship shot-relay teams and won several invitational shot-put meet championships. Faello was awarded a trophy at the Friendships as one of the top four Nassau County shot-putters. Faello also has been invited to the last two Nassau County State Qualifier Meets which consist of the top six Nassau County shot-putters. Faello will play lacrosse at Brown University.
Team members who stepped up to help the senior captains compete for a county championship were: Scott Chion, a junior scored in the 55 meter high hurdles (8.8); Chris Mirabile, a senior, was fourth in the 600 meter run (New York University next year); Truman Lam, a senior, was fifth in the 600 meter run and the Williams brothers, Damion (4th) and Troy (6th) in the long jump. Troy Williams, a sophomore, was fifth in the triple jump. The two strong relay teams 4x400 meters and 4x200 meters scored eight points each for second place in very close finishes. The 4x200 team was David Young (10th), Hendricks, Mike Connors (11th) and Scott Licata (12th)--best race of championship. The 4x400 meter team who carried the baton for second place were Andre Montague (10th), Troy Williams (10th), Chris Mirabile (12th) and Truman Lam (12th). All athletes made the All-Nassau County team.
The team now consists of Garrett Spitz and Jamiel Hendricks who will compete in the Eastern State championships, New York State championships and the National Indoor championships.
