Our procedure for reporting on police activity in Manhasset works this way. Every Monday morning we go to the Sixth Precinct Station on Community Drive and are given the reports of police activity in our area for the past week. Occasionally we have questions that require more information than is in the police reports. When that happens, Sixth Precinct Commander Inspector George Morrish has always been most forthcoming and helpful, either answering our questions or referring us to the right person. This has always seemed to be a satisfactory arrangement. We report on the incidents, naming a street but not a proper name or a specific street address for obvious reasons. During the past month we have received three phone calls from people who want more information. Some people believe the police are withholding information but we do not think this is the case. In fact, one detective told us that an informed and curious resident is the best ally the police have. In the light of one reported incident which led to letters being sent home warning parents to alert their children to beware of strangers offering them rides, we agree that the police should have given this information to the paper. We will bring it to Inspector Morrish's attention and will examine our police reporting. We appreciate our readers' calls on the subject.
