On Monday night, Jan. 28, Manhasset's boys indoor track team won its 24th indoor track championship since this program started in 1978. The athletes out-performed 10 Conference VI schools in a real team effort, scoring in all 12 events. Manhasset's team victory was won by 18 athletes, scoring and making the All-Conference Team.

Team scores were: Manhasset (116), Valley Stream South (86), Oyster Bay (53), Wheatley (37), Friends Academy (31), Malverne (22), Cold Spring Harbor (19), Locust Valley (2), North Shore (2), East Rockaway (1), and Valley Stream North (1).

Some of the athletes change each year, but the team's success always depends on a small number of athletes who compete in many events, athletes who have special events and relay runners. Senior Captains Garrett Spitz (16 pts.), Jamiel Hendricks (14 1/2 pts.), Damion Williams (14 1/2 pts.), Chris Mirabile (11 1/2 pots.), Truman Lam (8 1/2 pts.), Jimmy Faello (8 pts.) and Charlie Sferlazza (6 pts.) led the team, with juniors Jesse Cohen (8 pts.), Mike Connors (6 1/2 pts.), Scott Chion (4 pts.) and sophomore David Young (5 1/2 pts.) completing the scoring.

Manhasset's strength was proven in each event: 55 meters Jamiel Hendricks (3rd), Damion Williams (4th), David Young (6th); 300 meters Damion Williams (2nd), David Young (5th); 600 meters Chris Mirabile (2nd), Truman Lam (3rd), Anthony McLean (5th); 1000 meters Chris Mirabile (5th); 1600 meters Jesse Cohen (4th); 3200 meters Jesse Cohen (4th); 55 high hurdles Garrett Spitz (3rd), Scott Chion (4th); high jump Garrett Spitz (1st), Jamiel Hendricks (3rd), Mike Connors (4th); shot-put Jimmy Faello (2nd), Charlie Sferlazza (3rd).

Manhasset's relay teams scored 26 of 30 points and won two championships and one third-place finish. The 4x800 meters was third with Dan Treitler (11), Pat Bennett (11), Yousef Qureshi (9) and Chris Mirabile (12) handling the baton. The 4x400 meter relay team was conference champion with Troy Williams (10), André Montague (10), Truman Lam (12) and Dzvid Young (10) running a strong race. The 4x200 meter team of Damion Williams (12), Jamiel Hendricks (12), Mike Connors (11) and Scott Licata (12) was never challenged and won easily. The meet was scored 10 pts (1st, 8 pts (2nd), 6 pts. (3rd), 4 kpts (4th), 2 pts. (5th), 1 pt. (6th).

The team is now preparing for the county championship on Feb. 9 at Farmingdale College.
